PIERPOINT, Walton Stanley

1876 - 1960

Walton Stanley Pierpoint was born at 28 Victoria Street, Ipswich on 6 November 1876 and baptised at St Matthew's church, Ipswich on 2 September 1877, son of Charles Pierpoint (c1837-1911), a bootmaker, and his first wife Elizabeth née Brook (c1833-1888), who married at Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1863. In 1881, Walton was a 4-year-old, living at 28 Victoria Street, Ipswich with his parents, 42-year-old Charles, born at Earl Stonham, Suffolk, and 42-year-old Elizabeth, with two siblings, Elizabeth Alice 17 and Edward Charles 9. Walton was admitted to St Matthew's Voluntary Controlled Primary School, Ipswich in 1885. As Betsy Elizabeth, his mother was buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 20 October 1888, aged 53 and his father Charles married secondly at Ipswich in early 1891, Sophia Biggs. In 1891, Walton was a 14-year-old student, living at Bramford Road, Ipswich with his father, 54-year-old Charles, a bootmaker & parish clerk, and his stepmother, 55-year-old Sophia, who was born at Hornchurch, Essex. In 1901, a 24-year-old draper in the shop of Allan Stewart and his family, at 152 Norwich Road, Ipswich and in 1908 a commercial traveller, living at Waterloo Road, Ipswich. Walton Pierpoint married at Sproughton, near Ipswich in 1905, Ethel Maud Goode (3 August 1877-) and in 1911, a 34-year-old travelling clothier, living at 13 Fuschia Lane, Ipswich with his 34-year-old wife Ethel and their two sons, Allan Stewart 4 and Harold Stanley 1, both born at Ipswich but by 1921 he was a storekeeper in a local engineering works living at 28 Reading Road, Ipswich with the addition of a 6 year old daughter Kathleen Nancy. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1897-1929 exhibiting from Derby Road, Ipswich in 1893, two oils 'Sunny Afternoon, Pin Mill' and 'Evening Glow, Pin Mill' and four watercolours 'Old Cottages by the Orwell', 'An Old Windmill', 'Morning Redgate Farm' and 'Summertime, Pond Hall' and in 1897 probably the same oil 'Sunny Afternoon at Pin Mill' and same watercolour 'Old Cottages by the Orwell' and did not exhibit again until 1923, from 28 Reading Road, Ipswich, an oil 'Summer's Evening: an Old Cottage at Bramford', in 1924 'Harvest-Time, near the Water Tower, Rushmere', in 1925 two oils 'The Old Mill, Woodbridge Road' and 'On the Banks of the Orwell', in 1926 an oil 'Hazy-Morn, Straw-barges on the Orwell' and in 1927 four oils 'Levington Creek', 'Solitude', 'Summer Day by the River Bure' and 'Ipswich Docks' in all he exhibited some sixteen works, mostly local landscapes and river scenes. Walton Stanley Pierpoint died at St John's Road, Ipswich in 1960, aged 83.
